Castle Hill (2018)
Castles have captivated and inspired countless minds for centuries. In 2015, I was fortunate enough to attend the ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music) World Music Days in Ljubljana, Slovenia. In the middle of the festivities, a small group of us took a day and went exploring the city and the Alps. The centerpiece of Ljubljana is Ljubljana Castle, a giant stone structure originating from the 11th or 12th century located atop of Castle Hill. Although this work for concert band is titled Castle Hill and was partially inspired by Ljubljana Castle, it is not a direct illustration of the Castle itself nor of the surrounding grounds, but rather a musical depiction of old and ancient structures and ruins in general. While driving through the Slovenian Alps, we came across two ruins of what appeared to be fortresses. One (unnamed) appeared to be a fortress that was bombed and left to crumble away from WWII. The other, Fort Hermann, is a Castle-esque structure that was partially burned down in the early 19th century. Exploring what was left of the underground tunnels and chambers was absolutely thrilling.
Castle Hill was commissioned by the Northwestern High School Concert Band in 2018.
Castle Hill is available as digital downloads (PDFs) and/or physical sheet music (see options below).
