Program Notes

Roughly a theme and variations, Duet in C Minor manipulates the main melody while juxtaposing it with contrasting counter melodies and foreground. Beginning slow and somber, rhythms and tempo gradually build throughout the piece to an energetic finale.

Deterling was commissioned to write Duet in C Minor (originally for Alto Saxophone and Cello) in 2014 by Byron Klimek and Zoë Scherer.

I’ve adapted this duet for a variety of instruments. The score reads as a small flex-band ensemble, but this piece is intended to be performed by just two musicians.
