Program Notes
Inspired by folklore, literature, and film, Dwarves explores the many different sides of these creatures - from the powerful figures of Norse mythology to the more light-hearted characters found in popular culture.
The piece is built primarily around two contrasting themes:
Set in minor, the A theme has a dark, imposing character, often heard in the low voices to represent the strength and power of traditional dwarves (first heard in low woodwinds and low brass measures 13-20). When presented in the higher voices, it becomes lighter and more delicate, evoking their artistry as master metalworkers (first heard in oboe and clarinets measures 33-36).In contrast, the lively B theme is set in major and has a celebratory character that reflects the lighter, more playful side of dwarves (trumpets and horns measures 57-60).
Percussion plays an important role throughout the piece, mimicking the sounds of mining and smithing. In the middle of the piece (beginning in measure 97), a darker, more mysterious section is inspired by the Mines of Moria from Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Gradually descending lines in the clarinets and saxophones follow the dwarves as they venture deeper into the depths of their dwellings. The A theme returns, bringing the music back to the powerful character with which it began.
