  • Among the most cherished works by German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) includes a set of 21 dances: The Hungarian Dances. No. 5, the most famous of them all, is based on Bártfai emlék by Béla Kéler; Brahms mistook it for a traditional folksong. Completed in 1879 and originally written for four hand piano, these dances became influential in the development of ragtime. Orchestral arrangements quickly became staples in symphonic literature and have been featured in many films - from Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator to Mel Brooks’ Dracula: Dead and Loving it.
